Benefits of Tanning

The best-known benefit of moderate sun exposure is vitamin D synthesis, which occurs in the skin in response to the sun’s UVB rays. Vitamin D is a critical nutrient. It’s essential to promote absorption of calcium, the mineral that helps keep bones strong. Moderate sun exposure benefits your health, including stronger bones, better sleep, improved mood, boosted immune system, and overall longevity.

The research is ongoing, but so far studies suggest that UV exposure might lower blood pressure (which helps to protect against heart attack and stroke), curb appetite, and reduce the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and possibly certain autoimmune diseases.

What should you expect?

Many people enjoy using tanning beds to maintain or develop a tan year-round. Before you use a tanning bed for the first time, it is important to be aware of how to tan safely and evenly. First-time tanners should take the necessary precautions to ensure their first experience is positive.

Instructions & Tips Before Your Session

1Shave and Exfoliate Before You Tan
Dry and dead skin cells can prevent you from getting an even tan. Exfoliate a few days before you go to the tanning bed for the first time to make sure that your skin is smooth and soft. First-time tanners should also consider shaving or waxing to remove body hair before they tan. Like dead skin, body hair can block the tanning bed’s UV rays from reaching your skin and cause an uneven tan.
2Use Lotion
Use a special indoor tanning lotion. A study by the American Tanning Institute claims that using tanning lotion before you go to the tanning bed can help your tan last longer and your skin remain healthy. Indoor tanning lotions are often available at the tanning salon, though you may want to apply the lotion a few hours before getting into the tanning bed.
3Wear Goggles
Always wear goggles. Your eyes are especially sensitive to the ultraviolet (UV) rays transmitted by indoor tanning beds. Only specially designed tanning goggles will protect your eyes—don’t try to protect your eyes inside a tanning bed by closing them or wearing ordinary sunglasses. Most tanning salons will provide you with goggles, but if you plan to tan regularly, it can be a good idea to invest in your own. Your lips are also more sensitive to UV rays. To protect them, put on a lip balm with SPF before getting in the tanning bed.
4Listen to Your Body
Your body knows when it is in trouble. Pay attention to the way that you feel while you are tanning. If your skin starts to feel overheated, irritated, or painful sensations, get out of the tanning bed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is indoor tanning a better than outdoor?
The process of tanning in a tanning bed and outdoors under the real sun is basically the same. However, the main benefits of indoor tanning are speed and exposure control. It does not take all day to get a tan indoors. Depending on your skin type, it may be just a few minutes. Maintaining your tan indoors can take as little as 60 minutes a month. Also, you can control how much sun you are getting when in a tanning booth whereas the strength and amount of ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun varies from day to day. At Sun Rayz we regulate how much time you are allowed to spend in the booth. Our state-of-the-art equipment allows us to monitor and scientifically control your ultraviolet UV-A and UV-B exposure. We make sure you tan and not burn. Also, don’t forget that you will never have to worry about the weather!
Why Should I use indoor tanning lotions?
Specifically formulated for indoor use, professional indoor tanning lotions also known as “accelerators” enhance melanin production, as well as help to hydrate and condition the skin. Moist, nourished skin tans better and more quickly. When tanning, dry skin reflects light, not allowing UV rays to be absorbed as quickly as when using a lotion. By using a lotion, you are allowing more UV light to penetrate your skin more quickly, which can develop a more natural looking tan up to 60% faster. Indoor tanning lotions also add nutrients your body needs to produce melanin. Most accelerators contain vitamins and botanicals that moisturize and increase blood flow, thus increasing oxygenation of melanin cells to help speed up the tanning process. If you are unsure as to which lotion is right for your skin type, one of our Tanning Professionals will be able to help you to select the right lotion that will protect your skin and give you the best color possible.
Can I just close my eyes? Or do I have to wear tanning goggles?
You absolutely have to wear eye protection. Just closing your eyes is not enough; the UVA will penetrate your eyelids and damage your eye. The Ontario government requires you to wear eye protection at all times with all of our tanning units. We sell disposable and permanent tanning goggles.
How often can I tan?
To build a tan, tan on a regular basis. Don’t let your tan spend too much time between visits or start to fade. It is recommended that between each session you wait 36-48 hours to allow your tan to grow completely between visits. You can grow your tan by rising indoor tan time gradually and tanning 2 to 3 days per week. When you’ve got a tan, one or two days a week you should keep it tanning.
Are your tanning units good for skin conditions like psoriasis & eczema?
Yes, they are. All our tanning units have between 3-5% UVB, which is perfect for treating skin conditions like psoriasis & eczema. For certain patients, unsupervised sun exposure is a normal prescription to undergo phototherapy, they concluded. “The selected use of commercial tanning beds for the treatment of dermatological conditions may be another useful and effective treatment for patients who are unable to access phototherapy at the office or at home.” The research reviewed in the new study published in the Dermatology and Therapy journal indicates that sunbeds are a valid choice for psoriasis and may also be useful “as a treatment option for atopic dermatitis, fungal mycosis, acne, scleroderma, vitiligo, and pruritus, as well as other UV-sensitive dermatoses.”
Is it true that indoor tanning gives you Vitamin D?
Yes – both indoor and outdoor tanning gives you tons of vitamin D. One tanning session on our premium beds gives you between 80-100 glasses of milk worth of Vitamin D. That’s around 10’000 IUI's of Vitamin D. Vitamin-D helps fight prostate, ovarian, colon and breast cancer. Vitamin D is “The Sunshine Vitamin” which is produced in sufficient amounts in the body from sunlight exposure. Though you may not need to get a tan in the sun to make vitamin D, it is important to know that tanning in equipment with UVB will also produce vitamin D.
Can I tan under the age of 18 with parental consent?
The provincial rules ban the sale of tanning services to those under 18 and require operators to request identification from anyone who appears to be under 25.
